“Containment Lite”

The main point in this article is that if China starts to boss other countries around and not trade with the other countries, they will all join up against China with America and really show them who is boss. China thinks that they can be in control of everyone because they have a huge army but if they all gang up against China, China is out numbered.
The title “Containment Lite” was created in the last year because of China’s sudden urge to want to control all of South China’s Sea. China, at first, was being praised for being so clever in building cultural and economic ties with neighboring countries but only six months later china has been bulling and sending the countries they had ties with right into America’s arms.
I do agree with the writer just because no one likes someone that is too full of themselves, and in this case, China is the one who is full of themselves. We all know that China has a booming economy and a huge army but they don’t have to be jerks about it. Once you start being jerks to one person than you get a bad reputation, and when no one likes you, especially people who surround you, then you have some problems to work out.

NOVA

1.)    The first map is about how many millions of people are in the countries. China, India, and Europe have more than 125 million people living there today. And then parts of North and South America, and Africa with 15-30 million. The Earth’s population is 6.3 billion which is two more billion than in 1930.

How do you feel when you see that China, India, and Europe have more than 125 million people and America only has 20 million? Are you threatened by that?

2.)    On the next map it shows the growth rate for the countries. China, India and Europe have only light blue which means there population wont double until 30-40 years. While North and south America, Africa, and Australia will double their growth in less than 20 years

Why do you think that the countries with the biggest population will stop growing but the countries that have the smaller population will keep growing?

3.)    On the map it tells you about the cities and how 30 years ago 37% of people lived in cities. In the year 2030 over 60% of the world’s population will live in the cities. On the map it shows that the east coast of America, Europe, China, and Japan are mostly lit up and almost all of Africa isn’t.

Do you think having a lit up country is good or bad?

4.)    On the map it tells you how much irrigated water each country has. Surprisingly Australia has the most amount of irrigated water which is 10,000- 20,000 people every year, even though when I was there last Christmas they were entering into a huge drought. America is pretty low on the chart giving water to 5,000- 10,000 every year. This is the 2nd worst concern in the United Nations after population growth

What would you do if you ran out of water to drink? How do you think you would get water?

5.)     On this map it tells you how much each country pollutes. The top polluters are United States, Europe, China, and Japan. If we do not do things to improve pollution the whole world can be too polluted which can kill trees and the things that help us breathe. Places in  America have 500-1,000 Killos of carbon dioxide per square kilometer.

What ways are you helping the planet? If you aren’t right now how will you help the planet?

“Battle of the Billionaire”

Today India and China have the two biggest populations, China with 1.35 billion and India with 1.21 billion. India’s population is growing twice as fast as China’s — 1.4% versus 0.6% annually. China and India have a lot more guys then girls so that in 2020 there will be 35 million men who won’t be able to wed and 25 million in India. I personally do not want Indians or Chinese people to run my country. That is why I care if the population is increasing. I also do not think it is wrong for those countries to have small families because if they produce more and more children than the whole world will be controlled my Indians and the Chinese. In the 1950’s the fertility levels were the same but now at six children per women, but now in China the level of fertility is decreasing due to the One Child Family Policy. I think that this will help the huge population of these countries.

Israel and Pakistan
Two boys who weren’t even at the age of ten were hit by an Israeli by the name of David Be’eri. Be’eri said he only hit the two kids in fear of his own life because they were throwing stones at him.  Video footage and photographs show that Be’eri ‘s car swerving to the other side of the road just to hit the kids throwing stones at his car. Later it was discovered that Be’eri was an activists for Jewish settlement in the Arab East Jerusalem.  The area that he was in when he hit the two boys is where there is frequent violence of Pakistan’s and Jewish families and organizations that have moved into the area. The father of one of the kids who was hit by the car reviewed the video footage and said that his son and the other boy didn’t even have time to move out of the way of the car speeding towards them. David Be’eri was released after a few hours a questioning even though the Palestinian Authority condemned it a “hit and run” crime.  I think that this newspaper article favors the Palestinian way a little more just because of what this man did to those little kids. If I was a witness to the particular event I am sure i would be on the Palestinian side too.

I do think that it is important for us to know about who is the Shiites and the Sunnis. I mean we are fighting a war with them over in Iraq and Iran which is where people follow the Sunni way. Maybe if we understand the Sunni way we can understand why they are fighting with the Shiites and if we should be over in Iraq and Iran fighting in a war. I also think it is important because they are two totally different things. It’s kind of like saying Catholics and Jews are the same thing. That is not true at all they both have completely different beliefs. Shiites and Sunnis are in two different areas in the middle east so saying that they are the same thing just shows you how ignorant America’s leaders are.

Globalization in the story about the oil spill in The Gulf of Mexico is B.P. is blaming there other clients on the spill. They said that B.P. is mostly blaming the ones who make the cement that sealed the pipe line. If B.P. starts blaming their clients, the clients will stop working for them causing a domino affect to B.P.
Mozambique is affected by globalization because over in Russia where they mostly get there bread, Russia is charging more money to make the bread. Since they are doing that the Mozambiquens can't eat as much. Mozambique is located in sourtheastern Africa bordering the Indian Ocean. To the east is Tanzania and to the north is Zambia.

9/11 Paper

September 11, 2001 started out as a normal, beautiful day in New York. People went off to work at the World Trade Center, expecting it to be just another work day. Little did they know that that day was going to be one of the most tragic days in US history but also a day that changed America.
The goal for the terrorists attack was to try and lessen Americas’ power and destroying the World Trade Center was a good idea for that. The WTC was built in the 1960’s to restore the people confidence of the future. The complex was located in New Yorks financial district. With a total of 7 world Trade Centers, 107 floors, and 13.4 million square feet of office space the World Trade Center quickly became the symbol of New York City. The WTC was home to many business and many people (www.wikipedia.com). 9/11 wasn’t the first attempt to destroy the WTC, in 1993 a group of terrorists planted a van, with 1,500 pounds of explosives in it, in an underground parking garage near the north tower. Their plan was to blow up the north tower and causing it to fall into the south tower. They did not succeed but did cause six deaths, 1,000 injuries, and millions of dollars’ worth of damage (www.wtc.com). After the world trade center was destroyed they created a memorial for all of the people who lost their lives last day called ground zero. They are now thinking about rebuilding the twin towers in the future.
Before 9/11 from what I remember, airport security was nothing. All you had to do was walk through a metal detector and get on the plane. After the terrorist attack, airport security has really stepped it up. Now you have to arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight takes off. You also have to take off your shoes and jackets while walking through security, open and turn on your computer, and you are not allowed to have more than 12 oz. of fluid on your carryon bags. Airport security sometimes picks out people that look suspicious and do a full body search. If you have been dealing with explosives they can tell and you will not be allowed to fly on the plane. Also when I visited Holland, at the gate, airport security would come up to you and ask you questions like did you pack your bags yourself and have you let your bags out of sight at all? The Amsterdam airport is one of the worst airports to fly out of because they have a lot of connecting flights from the Middle East countries.
Air travel today is the second most common way to travel besides traveling by car. After 9/11 the air traveling decreased in huge numbers. People were scared to travel again just because of the risk of another terrorist attack. It didn’t just hurt airlines it also hurt the hotels and restaurants that survive on the tourists who visit. Today United States air travel is the safest in the world. After 9/11 the FAA and air traffic organization designed new equipment to help keep the skies safe. The new invention is called the Next Generation Air Transportation System or NextGen. This system uses satellites in space to pick up on the movement of the aircraft instead of radars that are on the ground. This will allow the people who are tracking the aircrafts a much more visual picture. You would think when you see the towers at the actual airports, that they are the ones who are guiding you throughout the trip but they are only tell the pilot when to take off and where there gate is. The ones who guide you throughout your trip are people all through the country who are picking up your radar on the ground.  They have a section of controllers, for example Potomac TRACON deals with the planes that fly out of Baltimore MD, Richmond VA, and Washington DC. This allows the transportation of aircrafts to be as safe and easy going as possible.  When aircrafts use satellites instead of controllers on the ground the aircrafts wont physically have to pass over that control allowing them to go anywhere in the country.
I think that right now it is okay to fly. I have been on many airplanes after 9/11 and there haven’t been any problems yet.
